FROM a camera flash just for phone selfies to a seat that tips you upside down during video games, Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is showcasing plenty of unexpected, even wacky technology.

The world’s largest mobile phone show, with more than 90,000 attendees, this year became a home for robots, wearable gadgets, virtual reality, and devices that turn cars into wi-fi hot spots.

Below are 10 of the most wonderfully unusual gadgets on display.

WHIPLASH

This motorised seat adds shocking reality to virtual reality games, working with a headset to tilt, spin, tip and turn hapless players upside down.

The Whiplash seat looks like something ripped from a racing car, with seatbelts to match. After securing vertical and horizontal straps, users connect it to a virtual reality headset such as Oculus, Samsung Gear VR or Google Cardboard.

Using Whiplash software, the seat tilts and spins with the game and the user’s head movements.

Its Spanish creator intends to deliver a home edition of the seat for $US10,000. Not for drunken party games.

LENOVO SELFIE FLASH

Those who want to put themselves in a better light may appreciate this selfie-based creation.

Lenovo’s smartphone flash gadget is a rounded flash light that highlights faces in a flattering light.

It plugs into the headphone jack of any phone, lighting up the user’s face with the press of its one button.

The Selfie Flash SF100 is due to arrive in Australia later this year with a price tag of $45.

NOKIA N1 TABLET

This unexpected tablet computer looks like an Apple iPad, uses Google Android software, and bears the Nokia brand.

It’s a combination bound to befuddle gadget fans but one that works with slick efficiency.

The 7.9-inch tablet computer features a well-made aluminium exterior, and Nokia has organised Android apps with software it calls Z Launcher.

To find an app, you simply trace a letter on the Z Launcher widget and apps that alphabetically correspond with the letter appear on screen.

It also features a Type C connector that allows users to plug in a USB cable on either side.

The Google Android Lollipop tablet is currently on sale in China, priced at $US249, and its arrival in other countries has yet to be announced.

LG WATCH URBANE LTE

It’s not an Apple Watch, but neither is it Android Wear.

LG’s latest top model smartwatch features a version of its WebOS software, delivering a rotating menu of apps with features including a voice translator, NFC payment technology, and even a remote camera trigger for a connected smartphone.

The Watch Urbane LTE can also use its own SIM card to act like a 4G phone in its own right.

No word on when this rather chunky timepiece will make it to Australia.

SAMSUNG GEAR INNOVATOR EDITION

Virtual reality will come to the next generation of Samsung smartphones and it’ll be lighter on the head.

The smartphone giant announced a new version of its Gear VR headset, dubbed the Innovator Edition, which is compatible with both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Edge S6.

The new white and black headset, created in conjunction with Oculus, is 15 per cent lighter but features the same touchpad for navigation and features fresh content including 360-degree tours of Iceland, new Cirque Du Soleil performances, and wartime shooting games that use a Bluetooth controller.

Expect to see this in Australia when the smartphones arrive in April.

GUESS CONNECT

Even fashionable watches are getting smart.

Guess has teamed with Californian-based Martian to deliver an analog watch with a small digital display on its face.

The Guess Connect can pair with Apple or Google-based phones, using an app, and deliver text messages, voice messages translated to text, alert the user to phone calls, and deliver custom vibrations so users know what notification has just arrived on their phone.

The Guess Connect watch is due to arrive in the US late in October.

HTC VIVE

HTC not only entered the fitness gadget market at Mobile World Congress this year, but revealed its first virtual reality headset.

The Vive, created in partnership with video game developer Valve, promises to deliver “rotational” virtual reality that lets users walk around a room, interacting with virtual objects. The headset connects to a PC to deliver virtual reality games.

Unfortunately, a developer edition of the headset was only available behind closed doors at the event this year, though HTC promises it will become public by the end of the year.

GIONEE ELIFE S5.1

A new company won the “my phone is slimmer than yours” race at Mobile World Congress with a handset that is just 5.15mm thin.

The Elife 5.1 phone from 13-year-old Chinese maker Gionee features a body made from metal and glass, with a tapered edge that slims its profile even further.

There’s no word on when Australia could see the Google Android-based phone, however.

HUAWEI CARFI

It’s no longer enough for your car to get you from A to B, but it needs to deliver an internet connection as well, according to Huawei.

The Chinese phone maker unveiled a CarFi device at Mobile World Congress.

The gadget plugs into a car’s cigarette lighter and, after you add a SIM card to it, will broadcast a wi-fi signal for up to 10 devices.

It also features a USB port to charge one device.

The Huawei CarFi is available in Europe now, though there’s no date for a wider release yet.

SONY BLUETOOTH SPEAKER

This tiny speaker doesn’t just play you songs but can act as a tiny assistant.

The BSP60 Bluetooth speaker connects to a smartphone and lets users ask it about the weather, about their appointments, or request it set an alarm to wake them.

The speaker can also be used to deliver conference calls and weighs just 325g.

Select Your Mobile ANDROID?

Why does it matter?

Download Cirque Mobile Phones & Portable Devices Driver

Since each mobile phone is unique, game developers usually create specific versions of their games for each phone. Just like you can't play a XBOX 360 game on a PS3, you can't play a mobile phone game unless you specify which phone you want to play it on.

We've tried to make it easy. All known cellular phones, smart phones, PDAs, and other supported handheld devices are listed by manufacturer below.

For most mainstream manufacturers like Nokia, and SonyEricsson, it's very easy, but some phones are branded and listed by the carrier (e.g. Vodafone 710), so we also have a single page listing all models.

Not sure what model you have?

Check our support page for some tips.

Or just visit our mobile phone WAP site with your phone's browser. Just point your phone's WAP browser to www.mobilerated.com/wap. Once on the WAP site, you can select 'help' to see what type of phone you have. You can see all our great games and download them directly or, if you prefer, come back here and browse from your computer - the choice is yours!

Can't find your phone?

Check again to be sure it's not already listed. If it's not, we'd love to add it. Please post a request in the forum.

Or even better, visit our mobile phone WAP site with your phone's browser. Just point your phone's WAP browser to www.mobilerated.com/wap and we'll auto-detect your phone's manufacturer and model, research it, and add it to the list of phones.
